As a long time upland game hunter, I am looking forward to my first deer season in North Dakota.

I could use some help picking out some AFFORDABLE outerwear... something pants and jacket under $200.

Local store has a nice looking Columbia brand wool outfit, for $150. I read that wool wears well, stays warm when wet, and is quiet. What I can't find is do stickers, briars, brambles and similar stick to wool?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Lee, Wool is nice but modern synthetics do everything wool does, frequently for less money, and without the need for dry-cleaning. Stickers, briars, brambles love both. Good hunting! Michael

Wool also soaks up water and you jacket will weigh 35 lbs. Go with modern synthetics, which are lighter, at least as warm, and easier to care for.

I think a guy who walks through a slough in NODAK wearing a wool outfit might well come out the other side twice as big as he started. Cockleburrs, foxtails, sandburrs, beggars lice and a miriad of other sticky weed seeds evolved to stick to and be carried away by the fur of animals. Wool is ...wait for it.... the fur of animals! Eastern deer hunters wear wool clothes because they are quiet in a woodland envionment, warm and traditional. I wear and like wool but not as outerwear at least not on the lower part of my body. If you really want to try wool there is a mail order outfit in the Minneapolis area that sells GI surplus. On the web at www.sportsmansguide.com They have a pair of brand new heavy wool pants for between $10 and $22 depending on your size. Kind of a grey green color. I am thinking about getting a pair but to wear under my Carhartt bibs on real cold days. Larry

Larry,

You have presented a very good case for wool. I have picked up wool garments at the military surplus vendors at gun shows for the very reason you are thinking about. It does work and I know more than one guy who will dress like that for a day out doing some ice fishing.
