I was born and raised in North Western Pa. Our winters are cold with lots of snow. I started coon hunting at a very young age. We only winter hunted when there was a light snow and lots of bare ground. As I grew older I found hunting coon in the snow was great, if there was some open ground around the lakes and streams. Most of the coon headed for a den tree, but the hounds learned to hunt hard. As a result my hounds improved. By the time the spring hunts started. They did better in the competition hunts.
When I left school I could travel to the south and could hunt on the week ends. The competition hunts started earlier in the year. I could hunt some of the great hunts in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. These hunts were a great place for me and the hounds to get ready for the hunts back home. The hunters in the south always gave us great competition and were more than fair. We won our share of those hunts and when we went home my hounds were always the sharpest hounds around.
When I retired I moved south and still go to some of the hunts. Thanks guys you made my days
