Just recently purcahsed a Win 88 in .308 cal. came with 1.5x4 power scope, gun case, one clip. paid $350 Cdn for it.

Was wondering if anyone has comment on the gun. Iti s a pre-64 vintage, probably about 80-90% grade. Was wondering if it is as good as they say and if the price was right. I was looking at gunbroker and saw one listed for $400US.

A fine rifle and a real bargain (steal). Loved mine until my then new wife 'stole' it from me. That's ok, I got a great hunting partner and once in a while she lets me borrow it. It is perfect for her since she is a lefty.

Essentially what you have is a bolt action that is lever actuated. The rifle is one of relatively few levers that actually uses a locking bolt to close the action. The only other one that comes to mind right off is the Sako produced in the same era and due to smaller production in about twice as expensive when you can find one.

That would be the Sako Finnwolf, a very nice rifle if you can find it.

One other bolt action lever rifle would be the Browning BLR, BLR-81 and BLR-Lightening.

I owned one of these for several years. It was surprisingly accurate shooting 1-1.5' groups at 200 yards. I took several deer with it. Sounds like you got a nice piece at a good price.

Great rifle and a real bargain. I've had one since '70 and have killed quite a few deer with it. Every year I would take it to the range and place several shots in the bullseye - never lost zero. Passed it on to my son a few years ago when I 'upgraded' to a Weatherby but have often been tempted to trade with him.

Hi Tom: thanks for the support. Do you have any preference in ammo that you use. I am interested in the Federal Nosler Partition or Winchester Supreme Partition Gold.

What is a good asking price in the US for this gun, I recently looked at ebay and saw one aucitoning for over $1,000 US

I'm currently shooting Federal Premiums with 165 gr. boattails (Nosler partitions I believe) only because I haven't had time to reload (but I'd still use Nosler). I've shot everything from 110 gr to 180 gr with good results. I shot an 8 pt. this fall w/ 165 gr - only shot was throat entry from above while deer was licking a limb. Bullet traveled down the neck, through the shoulder and stopped just under the skin - perfect mushroom. He dropped in his tracks. Not sure about the asking price. Are you sure about eBay? Their policy is to not allow firearms (dammit). There is one currently running on Auction Arms at $450.00 but will probably go higher before the bidding ends - you might keep an eye on it. I'm going to a gun show this weekend here in Houston and I'll keep an eye out for one and let you know if I find one. Take care and enjoy.

.. Tom, thanks for your help. I to knocked down a great looking 10pter with a 308 on the first shot. He went about 10ft from where I shot him to where he jumped and fell, great shoulder shot, blew the lungs and broke his back at the same time. I have purchased the Win 88 and now am looking for an extra clip somewhere.

Clayton if you watch the online gun auctions you will see magazines for the M88 fairly regularly. Be prepared though to spend $40 to $60 for
