Hi group, I recently purchased a Ruger .454 casull Super Redhawk with the 7 1/2'' barrel. What type of round (jhp, sp, etc) and grain would be best for bear? deer? Thank you,

I wish I had your problem. But, based on the 44 Mag I would think that the hardcast bullets followed by the soft-points would be best. They would tend to have the best chance of retaining most of their weight.

For the deer almost anything will work. For the bear I would go to hard lead LBT style bullets.

Scott, For the average deer I see no reason to use anything heavier or

fps. For bear hunting maybe the faster heavier slugs will interest you, but they are a lot less fun to shoot. What you really need is a Dillon Square Deal B set up for the 454 so you can load enough practice ammo to become a fine shot and to calibrate your loads to your recoil tolerance and the game you have in mind. Good hunting! Michael

Sverre,

Do you know of a web site which shows this Lee mould. My catalogs are all 6 or more months old and do not show a 325 grain mould in any 452 or 454 diameter. At least not when I am looking but I have been known to miss things in catalogs.

I asked an experienced guide this same question about a 44mag and he said that he wanted some expansion so he liked the Winchester gold dot ammo. This is a controlled expansion round.
