Well, he can take it to a taxidermist and have it tanned either hair on or hair off.

Home tanning isn't all that great unless you are into buckskinning and do brain tanning.

It takes more than one hide to make a coat. Probably around 4 or so. If he plans on hunting a lot and getting more, then save them and make the coat later when he has enough and has seen enough coats to know what he wants.

I had one and made it into a 'sleeve' for my rifle so that it covered everything except the trigger and stock. Worked nice for protection and ease of removal for shooting.

Best,

my father made a jacket and even pants for himself with his. also, a skirt and jacket for my mother. i know my mothers outfit took 5 skins, don't know 'bout the rest.

i am lucky though. his didn't fit him anymore, and he sent them to me. the jacket is now something like 25 years old and i wear it all the time, and get plenty of compliments. the pants he and i seldom wore and they look new.

the pants feel good too, as they are soft against the skin. just love them both. oh, he used deer skin to sew them, and cross sections of antler, drilled two holes in them. those are the buttons on the pants.

suggest he has them tanned proffesionally. he can always decide latter what he wants to do with them.

wear'n skins
