Is the weatherby vangaurd in 3006 a good rifle. Im a 15 year old on a tight budget so I nead an affordable rifle. I will mostly be using it to hunt Minnesota whitetails, but nead it to be able to kill elk and moose. I will be mounting a nikon 1.5-4.5X scope on it. Thanks!

I have a Howa Lightning that I believe is pretty much the same rifle (Howa manufactures the Vanguard for Weatherby). Mine is a 30-06 in stainless steel w/ a synthetic stock, and I have been happy with it.

Look around a little for prices on the Howa; you might be able to find them cheaper than the Vanguard. I bought my rifle from Outdoor World (Bass Pro retail outlet) in MI for $325. The closest store they have to MN appears to be Gurney, IL, though.

The 30-06 is fine for what you want; just consider using heavier premium bullets for the elk and moose.

The Nikon is also a good scope choice, IMO. I have a 3-9x40 Monarch on my rifle, and I have been very happy with it. They are a hard scope to beat for the money.

Paul, The WalMart Vanguard appears to be a pretty good value. Their Savage 110 package looks good too, but you are planning on a much better scope (and a more useful power range) than the packages usually include. If price is a real deal breaker (I could just barely afford a 'sporterized' $50 Springfield 03 when I was you age) have a look at the NEF HandiRifle in '06 as well; I haven't used one but it gets surprisingly high marks from those who have. Good hunting!

Wish I had kept mine, I had one with the glass stock! Sold it to a hunting friend. I harvested 14 deer with it and he has three deer and an elk. We used to call it the 'green deer killing machine'
