VIRUS Alert for rec.hunting

....just wanted to give everyone a 'heads up'.

I recently began receiving hundreds of emails containing

couple of days, use a firewall, and also use an email quarantine utility, so it didn't get through to my system.

******************************************************* *********** Most of the virus email subjects repute to be a 'Microsoft Security Update', or related MS Upgrade. A few subjects referred to 'Undeliverable Mail', or similar.

Be careful. Don't click on *any* executable (in this case it's 104Kb) unless you know exactly what it is.

It is nastier ***for newsgroups*** than the run of the mill worm. In addition to harvesting address books, it has an NNTP function to harvest all posted addy's ***from any newsgroup visited by the infected computer.***

If you've posted *anywhere*, with a valid addy, you could be targeted.

Update your AV software, folks, and munge your email addy. If they want to yell at you that badly, they'll figure it out. :o)

Yes, this one seems to be a bit out of control.

MicroSoft does not send out unsolicited patches and fixes for its software. If you receive this sort of file, no matter how real it looks, just delete it. And, update your virus software. If you do not have virus software then get it.

Normally, the moderators would not allow this type of msg to go through, but the virus is really creating a mess.

It's a better idea to just fine anybody $1000 who mails out viruses and has not installed anti-virus software and a firewall.

OB hunting: negligence like that is equivalent to firing a gun without being sure of your field of fire.

I wondered if you would allow it. Thank you for doing so. This virus is truly 'a mess', one I first encountered from another group, and I wanted to post a warning here.
