Hi all,
I have a problem with my 10 month old yellow lab. He is a great family dog, which is his primary role, and he loves to retrieve and I hope to take him hunting with me in the future. However, he has a habit that I am having a very difficult time breaking him of. He absolutely goes nuts when he first sees people or other dogs. His tail gets going and he will practically kill himself trying to get to the person or dog so that he can play with them or whatever. 2 minutes later he could care less and will be calm and walk around and interact with people at a much more acceptable level. He still likes the attention, but at that point he won't jump up on anyone or try and lick them to death.
Any thoughts on this? He is around people a lot, but unfortunately I am having to kennel him much more than I would like because of his behavior.
Thanks!

A big part of it is his age. He's still a puppy and he's going to act that way! How much obedience have you done with him? You should be at a point that he will obey you on a leash no matter what. What I would do to cure the problem is to keep him on a leash when visitors come to the house. Before you open the door, have him sit....If he disobeys, sit him down again more forcefully until he understands what he's doing is unacceptable. When he's good, let the person pet him on the hed, or just ignore him.
