I've just purchased my new chocolate lab and he is currently 8 weeks old. I'm interested in training him to blood trail deer. Can someone give me some information on how to do this or tell me where I can get this information online? Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's not on line, but you could buy the 'handbook' for NAVHDA. I think it's called 'The Care and Training of the Versitile Hunting Dog', by Sigbot (Bodo) Winterhelt. It goes through training dogs to blood trail wounded game, and more.

Do you hunt? What type of hunting do you do? What type of weapon do you use for that hunting? I would guess that very few people can say that they have never had to trail a deer for some distance in a life's worth of bow hunting. If you bow hunt and you can say that honestly then you should be rich and famous as one of the best. I don't recall seeing your name as one of the best in anything I read about bow hunting so I am going to venture to say that it is not the case. If you don't bow hunt and disagree with the sport because of whatever feelings you may have on the humanity involved, please, as so many other people have brought up time and again, don't ridicule someone else for doing something that is perfectly legal. I can not tell just as you should not be able to if the first poster was trailing gun shot or bow shot deer. So just watch your wording and mention that if he is trailing gun shot deer than maybe he could better spend his time practicing shooting instead of dog training. Even so since none of us walks on water maybe a dog trained to trail would come in useful on the occasional bad shot. Ed

time better >spent.... agree.
You know, it gets really old getting SMART-ASS responses from people when you ask serious questions. But I guess the coward in them comes out when they can converse with someone without having to look them in the eye.
But, for your information, I'm in a deer camp with 20 other hunters. We lease and hunt a 3000 acre area that has some pretty dense thickets. As you probably know, deer do not always fall in the exact spot where they are shot and sometimes can run 100 yards before going down. And 100 yards in some of our thickets is TOUGH going.
Our camp's intent is to recover 100% of all deer shot. I want to train my dog to help the camp achieve that goal (in addition to his first hunting priority of retrieving ducks). If a hunter is having a tough time tracking and finding his deer, then I will be able to aid him with my dog. I hate the thought of not recovering one.
So, forgive me Suteraa if I was trying to be an ethical hunter.

Well now. I was just passing on a little advice...Not being a smart ass.
Original poster's tone sounded like he was preparing to fail...I was just trying to help him prepare to be successful...kinda like those guys who buy and semi auto for that 'quick second shot'...
If you've got deer diving into thickets try an infared locator...Your going to tear up your dog using him in this manner...
I only gun hunt so don't get to track...

It is amazing that someone with as many errors of punctuation, spelling and capitalization as you have in fewer than 20 words would dare to call someone else stupid. Secondly, it is not unethical to use dogs to track wounded game. There is an organization in New York state called deer search inc. that specializes in tracking wounded deer. Thirteen states allow hunting deer with dogs. Fourteen states allow the use of dogs to track wounded deer. As I consider wasting game unethical, and have myself shot a deer that I was unable to recover, despite 2 days of tracking, I wish more states would allow the use of dogs to recover wounded deer.
