Just a quick post to let everyone know how one person (me) did on opening day of duck season in South-Central Texas.

I didn't have alot of extra time, so a friend and I went to a small pond (duck weed covered) about 20 miles from Lake Sommerville. When we got there (at about 6:30), we discovered that someone else was already there. I walked up, mostly to say 'hi' and find out who it was and it turned out it was someone from my retriever club. He invited to let us hunt with him (we could have gone to another pond, but this one was traditionally much better).

We all 3 limited out on wood ducks within about 5 minutes of legal shooting hours (I got 2 drakes, my buddy got 1 drake & 1 hen, other friend also got 1 drake & 1 hen). Over the next hour a couple more flocks of woodies came in - we watched them land in the decoys, swim around for a few minutes, then leave.

At about 7:30 a couple of flocks of gadwalls started trickling in. We all missed shots we should have made, but the pond is surrounded on 3 sides by large oak trees so frequently the birds were in too close to get a good shot (even though I had a skeet choke in). I ended up the day getting 2 gadwalls, my buddy got 1, and the other friend got 3.

For the day, the 3 of us shot 6 woodies & 6 gadwalls. Not a bad opener at

Congratulations!

We were rained out. Heavy downpours with strong wind and lightning in the Dallas area kept us off our lake

Glad to see you had better luck than I did. I walked into Cooper Lake for an hour to the spot where I usually hit the water. I couldn't even see where the water started. I didn't see many ducks, but I was probably a long way from the water.

I sure hope we get some good rains.

You guys should make a trip up to ND next year. We have water in abundance here. There are ducks in almost every little pothole. The problem we run into is you open up on some ducks, then they fly to the other end of the slough and sit back down. Or they fly over to a slough a few hundred yards away and won't come back. Not enough hunters to push them around and too much water for them to choose from.

We plan to. My wife is retiring Jan 1, 2000. We hope to be able to start in ND in Late Sept (scouting) and hunt to the end of Oct, when we Head for Kansas for the rest of the season.
