It may surprise the author, and others, that poodles were (originally) bread as sporting dogs.

No, it is a well known fact. But of course the poster realizes this was centuries ago, since that time poodle fans have successfully bred any sporting usefulness from them.

Actually, they're coming back...There are at least two Master Hunter titled poodles and many JH and a few SH titled dogs. Not too shabby.

No alligators left in Europe I'm sorry to say. Probably due to years of unregulated hunting. They are very prone to overkill in some parts of Europe. For example why it takes 15 dogs and 12 guys on horseback to bag one dinky little fox is beyond me. Could be because they aren't allowed to use any guns.

Fortunately (for the poodles i guess) most places have banned the use of live bait for alligator hunting. These days you must use artificial lures and you must practice catch 'n release hunting.

I thought I heard poodles were also used for training rottweilers as guard dogs. Can anyone confirm this?

For those of you unaccustomed to catch 'n release hunting_ it is widely practiced in areas where everyone is safe because there are no privately owned

Oh, I thought is was about the fine sport of poodle hunting.

Actually not, I grew on a West Texas ranch and we had a full size poodle and it was a very good work dog and learned quickly verbal commands and was good in working both cattle and sheep.

Today they do compete in North American Hunting Retriever Association hunt tests.

There was a poodle running in a AKC Retriever hunt test I was at this last weekend. It actually didn't do to bad of a job. It didn't swim as well as the other retriever breeds though.

Now there's an oxymoron for ya.

I guess if I was gonna write something like that I'd be ashamed to identify myself, too.
