Would a pellet rifle or a bb gun be a good deterrent for squirrels in a back yard? If so, can you suggest a satisfactory model. We're not in the country. There are neighbors on either side of us but not in back. The back faces a pasture. Thanks.

Most decent .177 caliber pump up air rifles have the necessary velocity to dispatch squirrels. I had one that would shoot a pellet through a piece of 1/2 inch plywood at 20 yards.
As long as you keep your shot distance reasonable, you should be able to kill them quickly and efficiently.
One thing to consider though, check with local laws to make sure you are able to discharge a firearm in your area. Where I live, it's against the law to shoot a bb gun, pellet gun or even practice archery within city limits. And the local cops here take as dim a view of shooting a pellet gun as if I were cutting loose with my .300 Win Mag.
Man, I've got to move!!!!

Bob, They are getting harder and harder to find but years ago Crossman made an air-powered 380 gauge shot-gun. If you can find one in decent condition it is very quiet and plenty powerful for the squirrels. BYW most cities have long established laws against discharging a 'firearm' within city limits. Air-guns are not 'firearms' and a number of cities have figured that out and passed new ordinances against the discharge of air powered weapons as well. Bill
dispatch squirrels. I kill them quickly and able to discharge a firearm pellet gun or even practice shooting a pellet gun as

I've killed quite a few with a pump air rifle. Benjamin makes a good one for around $100. If you want a really good air rifle RWS makes some nice models that shoot a .177 at 1000 fps for a couple hundred bucks.

a .22lr might be a better deterrent, most pellet rifles don't have the power required to do a satasfactory job, good luck a squirrel has a very boney body, if you want a pellet gun though there are certain RWS pellet rifles from germany that will have the power to get the job done. but they can be spendy in some cases.

Gamo www.gamo.com has some pretty good guns for the money. A friend bought the Hunter Shadow combo and is happy with it. I have a Beeman that is about the same velocity and use it to take squirrels in my backyard. With a head shot they are stopped in their tracks.
Prices on the Gamo site are retail so check out something like www.airgunexpress.com

I have been use a have-a-heart trap (live-trap) for a few years now and taking the little buggers into the basement and using a .22 cb cap in a handgun to make short work of it. Besides they taste pretty good when deer season gets tuff.bait them with a little peanutbutter. Its really works and the neighbors won't hear a thing, trust me...

A friend of mine shoots CCI .22 CB caps right in the back yard of his tract home, right in town. They are so quiet, nobody hears a thing. He backs into the house a bit and shoots out through his patio doors. Crows, squirrels, rats etc. are dying regularly.
