I've been offered a 25 year old SKB, model 500 with 26' barrels. The walnut stock is complete but shows heavy use (many dents, no chips). One barrel is missing bluing in a small (1/2 inch) area. Otherwise the gun appears to be in good shape. Is it worth the $700 asking price?

In my opinion, no.

I don't think that gun cost $ 700 even when it was brand new. Not even the Model 600 cost that much. I know I was with a friend who bought one. He bought it from me when I was the dealer. Now the 680 English might have cost that much back then brand new. Think that price is a bit much.

You can get a new SKB for about $850, so that sounds a bit steep for one that shows heavy use. My local gun shop regularly has a decent selection of used o/u shotguns, and the good condition Ruger and SKB weapons typically run $750 or so. I would expect that for a well used older gun, you could probably shave at least 10 - 15% from that price. For a weapon of that age and use, I would also ask to fire it prior to buying if possible.

Found this ad on AuctionArms:

$750.00 Ithaca SKB Mod 500 28 in Mod and Full Vent Rib Selective Ejectors New Cond. Ser. CF 541367 12 ga Seller: MILTON GORDEN Phone541) 664-1330

I'm into the old SKB side-by-sides, and not the O/U's, but I'd say the gun in question, showing use as it does, is worth quite a bit less than this 'new condition' one. Also, the short bbls make it much less desireable to a lot of guys, me included. This is esp. true of a heavy gun like the 500 (well over 7 lbs. with only 2-3/4' chambers), which is not really suitable for a lot of carrying. In a target-weight gun like this, I wouldn't accept 26' bbls

I agree, it's not worth $700 in my opinion.
