hello,

I just had a nostalgia attack, does anyone here remember shooting rats at the local dump when they were young?? I remember many, many saturday mornings going to the dump and just demolishing the rat population..at least temporarily sometimes I'd kill over a hundred of the little vermin with my single shot Remington .22,made me a pretty good shot and kept me out of trouble, I guess there is no place you can do that anymore, liability and fear of guns I guess...too bad

Yeah, back in simpler times I offed multitudes of rats at the dump near my house. You can get some pretty good action around a newly harvested rice field too. I guess showing up at a dump with the .22 will get you hauled away nowadays................

My brother and I would do this on my folks farm when we where kids. After loading / unloading the grain bin, there would be corn on the ground that the rats would come out to eat. We would lay on the roof of the nearby hog shed and snipe them with our pellet guns.

There are still isolated city or county dump sites where one can still do that. Always a lot of fun.

Brings back memories...I went and looked and my oldest Ruger 10/22 still has adhesive on the foreend from taping a flashlight there for killing rats.

Thanks for that bringback memory

Most assuredly it would, lets face it, most of the things we could do when we were younger we can't do now, ( Heck I once brought my shotgun to school so I could refinish the stock, one teacher asked me if it was loaded, I said of course not, end of discussion

In respect to what sasha said: I took my new .22 to school for show and tell in the 4th grade. I'd be shot for that now.

I remember saving the money my Mother gave me everyday for school lunch to go the the local ammo store on Friday after school and buy .22 ammo and shoot all weekend at the local dump. AHHH the good old days.

OK, but being originally from New Jersey (I know, I know, but one doesn't usually get to choose where to live as a child), I never had the chance to try 'dump shooting.' I live in Fort Worth...anyone know of nearby city or county dumps where rat shooting is still allowed?
