I'm looking for a very sturdy shooting bench. I want to do some very long range shooting (500-800 yds) with my 7mm Magnum. Cabela 's has two for sale, but are they stable enough for long range shooting?. Anyone have any

I just built one from a set of plans from an old gunsmithing book from Outdoor Life Book Club, sort of like a picnic table with cutouts for a shooter, I modified for both right and left handed shooters, on runners so it can be dragged but rock solid when you shoot.....plans required about 5 ten foot and 5 eight foot two by sixes plus screws....I used untreated lumber and painted, next time I will use treated, took less time to build than to paint!

I just responded to Alex Vitek, portability is a must for the bench I'm looking for. How portable is the one from Outdoor Life? from the basic description, it sounds like it shouldn't be moved much.

I solved my portable shooting bench problem with 1' plywood, 3 nipples of 1' pipe, 3 pipe flanges. and the required number of 1/4' carraige bolts. My seat is a 5 gal.Igloo water can. It's steady enough to take on prairie dog shoots. Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)

The Outdoor Life Book Club shooting bench is about as portable as a picnic table, not really something you put in and out of the truck bed when you hit the range....I will leave it at the range here and just adjust the distance from the backstop to shoot...really a great bench if you have your own shooting range or belong to a club where it will survive the other shooters

About 10 years ago, Rick Jamison was selling plans for a portable shooting bench similar to yours Bill. It used 2' pipe (I built it with 1 1/2' and a double thickness of 3/4' plywood for an 1 1/2' table top. It only used a half sheet of plywood and included plans for a seat from the scrap of the 1/2 sheet.

It is very stable as well as portable. Everyone that has seen mine loves it.

Grab yourself an issue of 'Precision Shooting' they may have a ad or two on where to get one, plenty of good shooting tips and reloading info also.

I am building one right now and hope to have it done by October but I think that it will not be light enough for your needs. But, what I did is measure a shooting bench that I really liked. Then, using those numbers I started laying out the wood and ended up making a change in the width of the top to suit our situation.

Someone mentioned a web site with three plans but that only one was available. It appears that the two other sites are no longer around. However, I think that I have one of the missing plans.

I zipped together the two plans for portable benchs and have included a picture of some permanent benches. Also in the zip file is a copy of the 'sighting in' targets from www.shooters.com or something like that. Send a request and I will send out the zipped file. You will need PKZip or Windows XP(which has the zip utility built in.) The zipped file is about 230 kp in size.

The bench I made that requires pipe and pipe flanges bolted to a plywood top is certainly portable. The pipes screw in and out of the pipe flanges and the whole thing fits in the trunk of a normal sized car. The three legs make it stable on rough ground. With a bit more work you can make the legs adjustable. Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)

Yes, I like to see the zipped file with the plans. I have XP. Please send them to me.
