To the Group:

Could anyone tell me the reasoning/rational for the common belief of 'Thou Shalt Not Scrub the Bore with a Bore Brush'?

Reading some postings in a Greybeard outdoors forum, there are instructions with Tikka rifles to never use a bore brush on their bores, and/or to never 'scrub' them, only making single passes from breech to bore. Ever wondered why?

On the other hand, the bottle of Shooter's Choice MC-7 that I have tells you to scrub the darn thing back and forth. It's a lot more effective, too, IMHO.

So, time to question a part of the Holy Grail of gun cleaning etiquette...why shouldn't you scrub the bore back and forth???

Any and all responses are welcome! I'm really interested in a good discussion on this one.

Thanks,

Scrubbing back and forth pulls crud back into the bore where it redeposits and possibly fouls the action. I have been known to do it on occasion, but I try to push only out the muzzle.

Get yourself a bore guide from Midway USA and you won't have to worry about fouling the action. It is really a cheap and effective unit that will keep the crap out of your gun, and helps guide the cleaning jags and brushes. they are caliber and action specific.

My understanding is that it is directed at those who want to clean their bore with a 'steel' bore brush. Most custom barrel manufacturers and some reloaders feel that the steel brush against the steel of the barrel will cause the rifling to wear.

Some of them also say that to much use of the bronze brush is bad for the same reason.

You mentioned a rifle barrel manufacturer in your original msg. A fellow handgun shooter ordered a 45 ACP barrel for a gun he was building and the instructions from the manufacturer said not to use any brush at all. The only thing needed was a couple of wet and dry patches. Included in the paperwork for the barrel was reference to the exact diameter of the bullets that should be shot through that particular barrel.

A lot of the benchrest group also abstain from using brushes,as they might cause undue wear to the barrel,or possibly score it with foreign matter, it probably doesn't matter in your average hunting rifle, but benchresters are a breed unto themselves
