I had a model 99 in .300 Savage for a while. I have always regretted selling it. It was accurate, and fast handling. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that gun based on effectiveness, especially at the range you describe. The .308 is plenty for that, and even larger game. My friend uses a .308 for his elk rifle with 150 grain bullets. As for any other rifle recommendations, I think you could fill a book with rifles that would work well at that range. Among the more popular would be a .243, .270, 30-06, 30-30, 6MM etc. I have no idea what the value of the gun would be, but I suspect that 300.00 is on the higher side of that model, unless it is exceptional. There are plenty of ways to verify that. One easy one would be to see what similar models are selling for on a site such as gunbroker.com.
