Hi, I was looking at a Savage 99 .308 for $300. Can I get some feedback on this rifle and any recommendations for a similar or better rifle? I'm looking for a bush gun for deer 100-150 yds.

I had a model 99 in .300 Savage for a while. I have always regretted selling it. It was accurate, and fast handling. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that gun based on effectiveness, especially at the range you describe. The .308 is plenty for that, and even larger game. My friend uses a .308 for his elk rifle with 150 grain bullets. As for any other rifle recommendations, I think you could fill a book with rifles that would work well at that range. Among the more popular would be a .243, .270, 30-06, 30-30, 6MM etc. I have no idea what the value of the gun would be, but I suspect that 300.00 is on the higher side of that model, unless it is exceptional. There are plenty of ways to verify that. One easy one would be to see what similar models are selling for on a site such as gunbroker.com.

In *my* opinion, Savage 99's are too heavy...Savage had some real quality control problems with the 99's in the early 1990's, I don't think I would purchase one manufactured in that time period.

The Savage 99 is a great deer rifle and the .308 is a great deer cartridge. If the rifle is in good shape, it would make a dandy woods rifle. Top it with a decent 2-7X compact scope and you're reday to go.
