They are neat guns, as long as you don't expect to much from them. They are reliable, handy, and fun to shoot. Accuracy should be expected to be around 3 to 5 inch groups at 100 yards. A trigger job helps in that regard, as does bedding the action.

So... the gun is not as effective as the cartridge, in terms of range. In other words, the .223 round is effective out to 300 or 400 yards, but you won't be able to hit, say, a varmint at ranges like that. However, for a brush gun, plinker, around the farm gun, home defense, etc, they are great.

The gun itself is about as reliable as a semi-auto can be IF you use good mags in it. Factory are best, followed by PMI (Precision) and Masen. Not much else out there worth using, though you never know. USA mags are NOT generally reliable in the mini-14.

I LOVE my mini... but then I don't expect it to be what it's not... folks who want extreme accuracy from them find them frustrating. The rest of us generally like them a lot!

I knew a rancher who used something like that when he had to 'put down' a sick or cancer eyed cow. Accuracy was never a problem. The cows weren't trying to get away. The problem with the Mini-14 is that one rifle platoon has to provide covering fire, while another rifle platoon advances, and everyone wants to be the division commander! The good part is that if you take it deer hunting, and you wound a deer, it takes two other deer to carry the wounded deer off the

The truth is that few Mini-14s do shoot good groups, with handloads, factory, surplus, or otherwise, and that's with a scope. The sad fact is that most Minis won't print much better than 3' to 5' at 100 yards. That's not good enough.

Good enough for what? The truth is most people couldn't shoot more then a 3-5' group offhand anyway even if the gun they were carrying were capable of it. The scariest thing I see every year is the weekend I spend at the Rifle range of the Gun Club I belong to for Public sight in days. I would estimate that 70-80% of the people through there are pleased as punch with 2 out of 3 even remotely close to each other (by this I mean anywhere from 1/2' to 6' and consider themselves ready to go out hunting. These shots are taken from bench rested guns mind you. I have a mini-14, and I consistently shoot 1 1/2 - 2' groups at 100 yardswith it. But I would agree that if you are looking for a competition rifle, it's not the one. But if you are looking for something to throw in the rig 'just in case' it's just what the doctor ordered and a hoot to shoot besides.

I heard the same thing. Mine is a stainless version made about 6-8 yrs ago. I will grant that it is not a tack driver. And if you are out to shoot as much ammo in a little time as possible there are better choices. Yet I upset my buddy that was trying to sight in his .270 at 200 yards. He had some clay birds he had set up and was trying to hit. I killed all 8 with 9 shots (needed one to get the range)

Maybe I got the one good one that was made.
