I am interested in purchasing an autoloading .22 rimfire rifle for plinking and small game hunting. I don't want to start a 'Ford versus Chevy' war, but what is your experience with the Ruger 10/22 and the Remington 597? Thank you!

Ruger the most accurate little 22lr ive ever owned by far. Bought it He could by it back when he got on his feet. What happened was i took it for a test drive and would never give it back definitly a keeper best 50 bucks I spent.

You mean someone other than Ruger makes a .22 rifle?

I own both a Rem 597 and a Ruger 10/22. The reason I have a 10/22 is because I had nothing but problems with the 597. It constantly jammed and did not perform nearly as good as my 10/22. My 10/22 also cost about half as much and has yet to jam. Another plus with the 10/22 is all of the accessories available for it.

Never heard of the Remington 597, however the Ruger 10/22 is a fine weapon. I have a Marlin model 60 semi-auto .22 that's a tack driver, also however I like my Ruger better. The Marlin has some plastic parts inside. The Ruger 10/22 is customizable in an infinite number of ways. The number of aftermarket parts speaks volumes of this. A 10/22 in stainless with a factory composite/plastic stock and a small 4x scope is a great combination. Just be prepared to shell out the bucks for large capacity magazines.

I have a Rem 597 & it's truly a great gun. More accurate than any .22 I've owned. Mine does jam on occassion, but that's usually during rapid fire & oddly enough, when using Remington LR ammo. Go with the 597 & Winchester or CCI ammunition.
