Hi folks,

Im looking at purchasing a remington model 700 sendero stainless in 7mm rem ultra magnum has anyone on the group used this caliber and can you recomend it, most of my hunting is done on the family cattle and sheep stations in mountanous country where long range shots at goats and feral pigs is not uncommon 300 to 600 yards. I currently use a tikka .270 using anything from 90gn speer hp to 150gn core lokt its a great rifle but i just need a bit of extra punch sometimes, I have a remington model 7600 in .308 and its a great close to mid range rifle on pigs using speer tnt 125gn hp. and 150gn soft pionts.........but any advice on the 7mm rem ultra mag would be great

Well... heck... I was all set to say that the 7mm UM was too much gun, but... if you can shoot accuratly at those ranges and have a real need for more punch at extreme hunting ranges, then it's hard to imagine a better caliber, on game in that size range.

Too much velocity for 'regular' hunting, though, in my opinion (just had to get that in <g>. Splat.

My only concern with the 7mm ultra is recoil. I had a Sendero SF in 7mm STW, so basically the same package you're looking at with a hair less recoil. It was a little bit hard to shoot up to it's capability because it wasn't quite heavy enough to absorb the recoil it generated using 'light touch' techniques needed for really precise longrange shooting. I had to hang onto it rather firmly so it couldn't take a run at me.

I think your idea of cartridge is probably a good one for your use, but it'd be a lot easier to hit with if you pushed the empty rifle weight up to about 10.5 pounds instead of 8.5; my rifle came in at about 10 pounds (8.5 pounds of rifle and a pound and a half of scope, base and rings, shells, and bipod) field ready and would have been a lot more 'fun' to shoot and easier to consistently hit FAR away things with at 12 or 12.5 pounds. Especially shooting prone!!

I think you'll find it to be a powder hungry pig, burning maybe 10% more powder per shot than a 300 weatherby, but you probably already gleaned that from the gun rags.
