You hit my choice on the head. I have used Mossberg 835 for geese and turkey up to now because there was not another affordable choice in 3-1/2 chamber. Since my boys have commandeered the two 835's, I have put the 870 super express on my Father's day list. It was on my Christmas list and Birthday list too last year...Likely I will have to buy it for myself.

Gary, A dipped camo gun is nice but camo tape will do the job. The 3.5' 870 Express would work but wouldn't be my first choice for a turkey gun. It would make a good dual purpose water fowl/turkey gun though. Make sure it has screw in chokes, because buying an aftermarket turkey choke will give tighter patterns, and therefore more range, than the standard chokes that come with it. For a true turkey gun, look for a 3.5' chamber with about a 24' 'back-bored' barrel with XXFull turkey choke. Back bored barrels will give a little more velocity. A ported choke or barrel will help with recoil, which is stiff with the #4 turkey loads. An auto loader is nice but not needed most of the time. Remember, the goal is one shot, one kill. At ~$325, the Mossberg 835 Ultra-Mag is not a bad choice. And remember there is nothing wrong with a used gun if it's in good mechanical condition. Pattern your gun at 30, 40 & 50 yards to get a feel for how close you need the turkey before taking a shot. But set your decoy in at 25 or so.

I picked up a Browning BPS in 10ga for a very good price. A little pretty for turkey hunting (nothing a little tape can't handle). But with the Briley XXXFull ported choke I put in it, it'll put several pellets in the brain and spine clear out to 50 yards or better. And that's what I like about it, range. Kicks like a mule though, but hey I only shoot a handful of shells a year with it anyway!! Talk to ya later, Mike in Oregon
