I have a problem with my Rem 7mm Mag.

As much as I do love the accuracy, <1/2' groups at 200 yards. It just does not seem to have the knock-down power I expect it to have, I hunt White tail in North Dakota. On 2 separate occasions I have made good square hits, from the front, at about 125 yards and the deer go down and then just get up and run, I hate tracking, and letting them get awayis worse. I'm using a 150g soft point boat tail at about 3000fps. Should I use a different bullet, slow it down some, or just trade it for a good 30-06? Any ideas would be a help.

Hi! You might want to look at some different type bullets, etc. I bagged an elk bull last month with one shot from my 7mm Rem Mag. I used Winchester 'FailSafe' 160gr. I was surprised that the bullet went all the way through the elk. He walked fast not more than 30 yards and went down. I think you should look at some different type bullets and see how well they shoot in your rifle. Also, get information and recommendations from the literature available and from friends, too! Good Hunting! Always, Gene.

Well, I hunt ND whitetails with a 7mm-08 and a 1 shot kill is the rule; not the exception. 140gr Nosler Partition at 2700fps. Think you've got a bullet problem. Buy a premium hunting bullet, and practice with the 8 cent soft points. Also, from the front doesn't give a lot of exposure to the vitals; make sure your placement is about 2-3 inches below shoulders if viewing from the front. Good luck from Bismarck.

That definately sounds odd. I would consider taking that bullet to the range for some penetration testing/comparison. Was the deer broad-sided? A .308 with a 180 grain should shoot through most any whitetail. I'm not familiar with that bullet. Is it a round nose, or pointed? In either case I would expect a shoot through. I use Federal 150gr classics (pointed soft point) in a .30-06. I shot two deer in the last three years right through the front shoulder blades (oops). In both cases the bullets passed through, broke both shoulders, ruined a large portion of meat, and dropped the deer in their tracks. I have since learned to place the shots a bit back of the front leg. You save a lot of meat, but they may not go down as quickly.
