My turn to ask the group an 'equipment' question.

Has anyone ever installed a recoil pad on a Winchester M70? Before I get into this project, could you recommend a competent gun smith in the Mesa-Tempe-Scottsdale area of Arizona that could do the work?

It is not that hard to install one, it is a matter of keeping your grinding of the pad straight. Is the Winchester a pre-64 style or push feed, and does it have a wood stock or synthetic? There are companies who make pre-fit pads. You might want to look in to those if you don't want to risk damaging the stock.

WGS,

The recoil pad is intended for a new controlled-feed Win. M70 with a wood stock.. I tried a pre-fit Pachmyer, but it doesn't fit the dimensions of the newly redesigned David Miller stock. So, I am back to using a gunsmith. Know anyone?

I bought a Winchester Mod70 featherweight 30-06 a couple of years ago and had a gunsmith put a Pachmyer pad on and do a trigger job at the same time. MAN, what a difference it made. Before this it kicked pretty hard and the trigger was way too heavy. Now even my wife doesn't mind shooting it since the recoil is so much better, and less painful. The trigger job was really great too. I found that when I shot before the trigger job, I would get to the point where I would just 'Mash' the trigger to make it shoot and now I just gently squeeze it. Much better!

Can't help you much with a gunsmith, I'm not from that area but I would reccomend using one. When I had it done they made sure to measure me and adjusted the stock length and everything so that it would fit me perfectly once the pad was on!

Two good gunsmiths in the area are

Jim at Don's Sports on the south side of McDowell between Hayden and Scottsdale Road. I have also used the guys at the Weapons Works in Glendale at the corner of Glendale and 19 Ave. Both are first rate and have done complex work for me. Both are in the phone book on numbers.

Hope this helps.
