Any thoughts on a relatively quiet, small caliber rifle suitable for turtle sniping? I have a .22, but just wondered if there is something quieter available, so as to minimize the offense to my non-shooting neighbors.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a floating turtle trap?

Oh yeah and I forgot it is generally considered unsafe to shoot a rifle at water due to the possibility of a ricochet.

First thing is to find out if it is even legal in your area. In Michigan it is now against the fish and game laws to shoot turtles or frogs at any time of the year. A lot of people do not know this yet.

As some have already pointed out it is not a good idea to be shooting at targets on the water.

You might try CB Longs in your .22. I don't know the velocity except to say that the 29 grain lead slug will almost penetrate a 2X4 from 20 or 25 feet. I dispatched a skunk with a head shot one night from my back bathroom window. It didn't kill it instantly but it didn't go but six or eight feet. Too bad I didn't get the window closed sooner.

Thanks for the feedback. I lost a floating trap in a flood last year, and have it on my list to build a replacement, but thought it might be fun to take my son on a 'hunt' that (for a change) would be successful. Also, the pond in question has a large dam to serve as a backstop and absorb any ricochets, and nothing for at least a mile in the event my trajectory estimates are way off base.

As yet, Oklahoma has not thought to regulate turtle management.....I better hurry up before they do!

Thanks again,

Try putting a 20oz drink bottle over the muzzle of your 22'.that is if your shooting shorts.or a tennis ball. Will not interfear with aim.but will quite it a good bit.

Other than that, you want to get your self a crossbow pistol and have fun

BTW,,,if ya get hurt by trying this,,it's ur own fault, not mine.

Definately something that is considered to be the 'poor man's silencer'. I don't know if it qualifies as a silencer in the eyes and ears of the BATF but it will certainly surpress the noise from a 22, whether it is a short or a LR.

If it is legal in your area (shooting turtles), pick up a pump pellet gun. It is quiet, and will do the job.

Amazing what memories some of these threads bring back. A weekend recreation for several of my brothers and I was shooting 'snapper' turtles from a suspension foot bridge that spanned the Sabine River near Gladewater, Texas. The bridge was built for the 'pipeline walker' in the days before the oil companies used airplanes to look for leaks in an oil pipeline. Hopefully not reaching too far for a pun, it was really snap shooting. Between the bridge swaying and the turtles surfacing for about three seconds to breathe you had to be *quick on the trigger*.
