Please help me wade through all of the 'BS' in selecting the proper factory-loaded bullet for whitetail deer. Seems everyone has an opinion and I'm not sure which is truly the best for my hunting situation. I'm shooting a Remington 700 BDL in 270 at ranges of 25 yards to 250 yards.
Below are the bullets that I've looked at and seems like the more I look the more I find. Since the prices range from $10/box to $22/box, I'm certain some are better than others. I used to just go to Wal-Mart and buy the cheapest box they had but now want to put some thought into which is the best selection before 'plopping' down my hard earned money. Can someone help me?

These are the factory loads that my wife uses in her Remington .270 after she got pissed because I would fool around with her hand loads. If you handload, they are easy to duplicate.
Her best one shot kill, a walking 9 point 200+ pound f/d Wisconsin Whitetail on Thanksgiving day, 1993. Deer expired in mid stride. The antlers are the only ones we display in the house, they were that nice. I like the 140 grain Hornady bullet when I handload. I have found Hornady bullets perform as well as anything I have seen and better than most.

As far as I'm concerned any of the 130 gr. bullets listed would be optimum for whitetail. you could use a 140 or 150 gr. but it's possible they would be too heavily constructed (with the exception of the Ballistic Tip) for optimum expansion on whitetail. Greg

I like the Wincester 130 power point and the Federal 150 gr. Nosler Partition in my .270. Stay away from the Remington Core-Lokts. They tend to blow up.

I've also had a bad experience with the 130gr. core lokt in 270 cal. I killed a deer yesterday with my new rem. 7400 in 270. and the deer wasn't but probably fourty yards away and the bullet didn't even pass all the way through! The deer droped dead in it's tracks (not even a step) But if he had ran I don't think I would have had a blood trail at all.I was very disappointed.Do you get good pass through's with the two bullets you mentioned?

i sighted my 30-06 in last saturday and was shooting 1'-2' groups at 100 yds with winchester supremes in 150 and 180 grain bullets. i tried some rem core-lokts in it to see how they handled and they were terrible! they were barely staying on the paper. at first, i thought my scope had gotten loose so i shot a few more winchesters and it was fine. the range officer said he has had the same problem with the remingtons recently.
i know that different rifles like different bullets, but it shouldnt be that drastic should it?
just my $.02

I just got a Savage 110 in 30-06 and sighted it in with 150 gr. Remingon Core Lokt pointed soft points and was getting about a 1-1/2 inch group at 100 yards. I haven't shot anything else through it, but for this deer season, I'm going to stick with the Remingtons. I do want to try some Winchester and Federal to see how they differ, but I'm satisfied with the Core Lokt. I figure even if it was shooting a 4' group at 100 yds, given the size of the kill zone of a whitetail, and the fact that the area I hunt, I will only be shooting 50-75 yards, I wouldn't complain. Of course I would like to get the smallest group possible to build my confidence in the gun and ammo. But if with Remingtons I got a 4' group and they were cheaper than Federals that say gave me 1' groups, I'd take the cheaper ammo and my confidence would still be good.

Well, Scott, at what point during the animal's death did the bullet fail?
What's your complaint here? *If* the deer had run? If, if, if. If a frog had wings his ass wouldn't hit the ground everytime he hopped. Jeez, the deer dropped in its tracks. Why are you worrying about 'if?' At forty yards I would venture I could have punched a 223 Rem 64 grain Winchester Power Point right through a deer's chest. David J. McBride Houston, Texas

That's exactly how it is. My wife's 223 shoots sub-1' groups with my hand loads, and 24' or larger groups with mil surplus. A 243 I had shot 3-4' groups of three if the bullets were seated to SAAMI specs for OAL, but sub-1' if I seated the bullets near the lands. It just varies, and it can vary by a great deal.

The New Wnchester Bonded Power Point 130 gr should be excellent in the 270 win.
