Good luck. I'm a resident of WV and have only one place to hunt. People complain about the deer and damage they do, but few allow hunting.

I don't know of any private hunting land. However, there are thousands of acres of public hunting land. I do most of my hunting in on public land in WV and the biggest drawback I find is getting to the areas to scout. Also, I must praise the WVDNR for being very helpful in finding places to hunt. Specifically, when I went to southern WV for my first boar hunt, and also last year finding a place to hunt in the counties open to concurrent deer/bear hunting.

Some public lands where I have hunted:

Mon National Forest WestVaco land Canann Wildlife refuge Various Wildlife manageement areas.

What part of the state will you be hunting and what types of game are you hunting?

I have never hunted Lewis Wetzel WMA. I wouldn't mind checking it out one of these days. You may look at:

Cooper's Rock State Forest ( Mon & Preston Counties ) West Virgina University Forest ( Mon County ) Snake Hill Wildlife Management Area ( Mon County )

If your willing to hike a bit you can ussually get away from the crowds. I recently bought a game hauler from cabelas. Hopefully, it will help getting deer out from deep in the public lands.

If you're looking for trophey bucks and have time for some over night trips, I would contact the WVDNR about places to bow hunt in Logan, Mingo, Wyoming, and McDowell counties. These counties have been closed to firearm deer hunting for years and produce the biggest bucks in the state.

I hunted one season in Springfield, at the Westvaco ground! Worst mistake I ever made. Granted this has been 5 years ago now, but the deer looked like dogs they were so small. Westvaco went in and cleared out all the oak trees and nut bearing trees, and replaced them with pine trees! Last time I checked deer don't eat pine cones! As I said though, this has been a while ago, and I moved to South Carolina since then, we have a real hunting season here, unlike WV (My Home
