In the past I noted several requests for methods to remove everything off the skull to prepare a skull mount. Last season my grandson and I brought back a 3x3 and a 4x4 whitetail head we decided would be just right for that. In the back corner of her yard my daughter has a large compost pile. Like where all the grass trimmings, and a lot of kitchen waste go to turn to furtilizer for flower beds etc. We buried the heads hide, brains, eyeballs and all in the compost with only part of the antlers sticking up. Last week we took them out and immursed the *bare* skull in a strong Clorox solution up to the base of the antlers for two days then rinsed them off and let them dry. I realize I can't track rabbits by scent any more, but yesterday I couldn't detect a trace of smell on them. They're ready to go on a plaque with a little plate that gives the date and place of their demise, and who dunnit. I've seen a number of skulls cleaned by the Dermestid beetlebugs.

If I was going to mount a worthwhile skull this is the only way I'd do it.

Be sure and click on the 'Dermestid kits' for a look at how they do their work.

Well when I did my grandmothers 6x6 bull, we (father and I) removed all of the meat we could, and boiled the skull minus the lower jaw, in a large pot over a camp stove. After a few more cleaning sessions we added bleach and let it sit for a bit. Anyway the end result was great and it no resides over here garage.
