I am going to buy a nice double this summer, prior to fall upland bird season. Primary reasons are that I appreciate fine craftsmanship/machining and want a lighter gun to carry around the hills. My current pick is a Beretta that is available for well under a grand at the XX-mart type stores. It's light and seems very nice. I've seen other Berettas that cost more, and the Brownings and Citorris, but they are usually more dough and heavier. What is gained by spending say $1400 rather than $1000 for a nice new O/U 12-ga?

Another data point is that the gun will be used in the field. I'll take care of it, but it will get used for real... so a super-duper stock, FI, would be a wast of money for me. Gonna get dinged anyway.

My only comment is that if you are looking for a 'lighter gun to carry', IMHO carrying two barrels is not the ideal answer.

You wouldn't think so, would you? But in point of fact, most good quality doubles are lighter than comparable pumps or semi-autos. You have the weight of the extra barrel, but a repeater has a lot more metal in the action and magazine, and you usually have a fatter stock and forearm to wrap around all that machinery. Also, the mass of a double tends to be more concentrated towards the center, so it _feels_ lighter and easier to handle.

Usually fancier engraving and prettier wood in the stock.
