#1 It was four DAYS. And 8 hunters.

#2 I never said EVERYONE was shooting that far. The two 550 yd shots were a 7mm mag and a 300 Wby mag. The Wby shot used a 125 gr BT that blew a large hole, way too much gun IMO.

one shot.(I didn't agree with that either but it's still legal.)

I had litteraly dozens of antelope from 50 feet to 100 yds. In one instance I got into a gully while a couple of guys went a mile up the

hunting bucks only area).FWIW!

My apologies to Ralph. The intent of my note was not to criticize Ralph but to make a statement concerning long shots and multiple harvesting by groups. His note can be misunderstood by some yahoos that think it is cool to shoot long range when they aren't aware of the finesse of long range shooting/hunting. Unfortunately we have a mixed group on this newsgroup of experts, new hunters, unethical hunters and antihunters. I think every post should be made with that fact in mind so we don't feed the crazies or the peta piranhas (also crazy).

'Pet piranhas', for just a second there I couldn't figure out how our pet piranhas got involved in this discussion, especailly if we are going to consider them to be crazy. Then, I reread it a bit slower. Still not sure that my pet piranhas would have appreciated the use of 'peta' as part of their name.

That sounds more like a petting zoo than an antelope hunt. The pronghorns I am familiar with are a spooky animal that won't tolerate a human presence. Admittedly my only antelope experience has been in Wyoming and Oregon.

. Still not sure that my pet

You are right Alex....Piranhas are far superior in all forms to the PETA group! I think saying PETA is probably enough of a characterization in itself.

I'd of liked to take a laser range finder to that yardage and see if it was 700 only in the minds eye and more like 200 in actualy distance.

If he hit a pronghorn at 700 yards, it was either pure dumb luck, or he had a laser rangefinder, a ballistic computer and a scope with 1/4 moa detents. I have a military surplus mauser with the flip up long range sights, and 700 yards is a substantial elevation of the muzzle. At 700 yards it will shoot a 12' pattern with factory ammo, if you clamp it in a vise. I consider that outstanding accuracy. If you wanted to hunt with it at that range, you would have to spray paint a circle around the pattern and wait for the game to stand still in front of the circle. Needless to say, the bullets don't end up exactly where the fixed military sights aim.

Any bullet will drop several feet in that range, and how much it drops depends on ballistic coefficient as much as muzzle velocity. Also, a variation in as little as 10 yards will move the bullet up and down a foot.

Long range hunting can be done, but it requires very specialized equipment and a lot of planning. It is not easy to build a sub-0.25 moa rifle and then aim it with that accuracy.

Stuff happens. The guy I buy gun things from just came back from a PD saffari and had two witnesses that he had nailed a PD at 373 yds with a .22 RF. Verified with 2 rangefinders and a GPS.

Yeah, well, a Police Department is a pretty big target. What did the cops think of him shooting at their building?

>snippety snip<

The terminal ballistic of a 22rf round at 373 yards must be about one better than nothing.

In which case, the PD must have died of surprise.

So much for all these guys in Varmint Hunter magazine using cf rifles to splatter PDs at twice that distance.

The referenced PD was one of those cute little varmints that live in colonies, have fleas, pass on bubonic plague, and makes a target that re-sets itself when/if you miss.
