Moose are pretty big, I have shot a few , never with anything small like a 30-06 and certainly not .270. However I do know several people who have done nicely with both. Perhaps you might consider the 7mm Remington Magnum, it isnt much more recoil than a 30-06 but has a bit more punch. Personally I have used the .300 Weatherby, the .338 Win Mag and .35 Whelen on Moose. I know one person who after having been charged by one, only will use a .375 H&H. Perhaps bit much. I am planning to use the 45-70 next time. Since the ranges seem to be shorter (under 150 yards). I just bought a .300 Weatherby Vanguard at WalMart on sale for $365. whic might be a good choice, its available in 7mm and 30-06 also.

Good luck.

Really like a 35 Whelen with 250 partitions for moose, shot 5 with combo over the years and it does the job great.
