Moose Hunting in Idaho

I live in Pocatello and am planning on trying to get a moose tag for the fall. I'm new to the state, and am looking for advice on where a decent area to hunt moose might be.

We have moose here in SE Idaho, but I'm not so sure if they are relatively abundant.

I'm not looking for any secret hunting spots to be given away (would be nice, though !), just some general advice on where to go. I would be nice to be able to combine with elk hunting, but not necessary. If I'm lucky enough to draw a tag, I'll be really focused on moose.

I'll be hunting with a rifle, not archery.

Ben I'm not familiar with any moose hunting down in the SE corner. My experience with the Shiras moose was mostly up in the Selway and they were abundant enough to wreck the elk hunting! Often had to chase them out of camp and at night they were a real pain. Up on the Middle Fork in and near the Chamberlain Basin USFS strip is a place named Moose Meadows and I'll bet you can't guess how it got named? When I was running a hunting ranch there we had moose around all the time but that was years ago. Being new to the area, have you considered a drop camp with an outfitter? I have often suggested that to new hunters as a good way to get aquainted with a good hunting area and they could go it alone in following hunts. Good luck on the draw. Ol Shy & Bashful

Thanks for the advice, Ol' Shy and Bashful. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I think guides are probably out of the question, although I'm not sure how much a drop camp and outfitter will cost. I'll have to check around.
