I'm headed for Northwestern Ontario for the start of the moose season next week. Can't wait!

Does anyone know of a url for a 'moose target' showing the location of vital organs? Where is the best shot placement? I'm going to be using a .30-06 in 220 grain.

Hi Greg,

I've shot a few moose in Alaska and one in Minnesota. You can't beat a shot throught the center of the lungs. Here's a good drawing of the vitals on a moose, or elk, caribou or deer for that matter: http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/FISH.GAME/ wildlife/geninfo/hunti...

You have plenty of gun. Best of luck!

A shot to the hump drops them in their tracks big time. It's surprising how many kill shots a moose can take.

A shot to the hump? I've killed my share of moose, always with heart lung shots (typically one shot, usually 120 yds or less). What is up there in the hump that would stop them? Seems like if you don't get lucky and hit the spine, it's only a 'meat' shot with no vitals. Steve

I'd suggest not using the 220grain ammo. If your rifle is a bolt action, the Federal 180gr. Nosler Partition High Energy load would work well. Otherwise just go with the standard velocity Premium load with the 180gr. Partition. The 220gr. load is out of date now, as premium bullet construction makes the 180s and 200s much more effective than the old 220s.

Hi Steve, I've killed my share of moose as well. The spine in the hump is over twice as large as the rest of the spine and that area controls all 4 legs. Secondly, the target of opportunity is much greater then a well placed heart/lung shot or short distance shot. In central B.C. where I hunt the first moose I shot was in '64', 300 yards is a short distance shot in Sept. grin.

Glad I don't have your distances to deal with. Sounds like it works. Steve
