You will have to check many of the farms in the northern part of the county to get permission to hunt. There are no large State Game Areas or State Parks in the county. However, there is a small game area on 25 Mile Rd near Gratiot Ave. and there is the Wetzel Park off of Dequindre near the Utica area.
You could look through the 'Public Hunting on Private Lands' booklet issued by the DNR. It lists private lands, usally farms, that the DNR has leased for hunting access. The listings are by county and include the contact person, location, acreage, and land type (wetlands, woodlots, farm fields). You might want to start checking now for potential areas for this fall in nearby counties since the current editon of the booklet does not list any lands in Macomb County. The 1999-2000 edition is still available at some of the smaller local license dealers or stop by a DNR office.
Also, pick up a copy of one of the map books of each county in the state. There are 3 different ones available but I like two. One is the MUCC version and the other is the 'Michigan County Map Guide' and they both show public lands.
Consider both Oakland and St. Clair counties. I have hunted state lands in both for small game with fair to good success.
