I am trying to find a site that will show me how to make a silencer for a ..22LR semi-auto. If anyone knows of a good site please let me know. Or if someone knows how to make one let me know.

Luckily for you, Cam, you live in one of the 'civilized and rational countries'. You guys in NewZealand (your email has the '.nz' extention) both dumped firearms registration, and permit silencers for recreational use.

Most of the rest of the world is bending over backwards (or is it forwards?) to be the opposite of both of those.

So don't be offended if you don't get a whole lot of replies to your question. Different federal agencies monitor these newsgroups, and as I type, some bored officer of the BATF, and another one of the RCMP are following this thread with interest, hoping to snare a moron that actually answers your question and gives them 'just cause'.

I'm afraid it won't be me, sorry.

I looked at the email address and it was from New Zealand. So, if the orignal poster does come from that country he does not need to contact the BATF for any reason unless he is planning on coming to this country.

It is possible that many laws have changed since the last time I did any research on the subject (about 2 years ago) so I do not know how much of the following is still current.

The Federal govt does allow private ownership of silencers. The citizen must fill out a lot of forms and jump through a bunch of hoops. The process and requirements and fees are very close to those for owning a full auto firearm.

The major stumbling block is the state and local rules, laws, and regulations that could prohibit anyone but law enforcement or military from possessing a silencer. Then, the uses for the silencer could be restricted.

Example, in the state of Michigan it is illegal to use a silencer for the taking of any game animal.

Did a Google search, and this is all I found:
http://www.newscientist.com/lastword/answers/ 586gadgets.jsp?tp=gadgets1 http://guns.connect.fi/gow/silencer.html http://www.att-tactical.com/awc.html http://www.gem-tech.com/twenty2.html

The first site states that it is not possible to silence a revolver. The CIA modified Dan Wesson revolvers for their operatives back in the 60s. This wqs possible because the Dan Wesson had an adjustable cylinder gap, and they adjusted it to seal the gap, eliminating gas leaks and noise. Most (98%) of the hits were from sites explaining the illegality of possesion of the silencers. Several books are available on the subject. Hope this helps some.

A semi-auto what? Rifle or pistol? When I was a kid I used to go rat hunting with my buddies down along the river inside a city. We made pretty effective silencers for .22 pistols by taping toilet paper rolls over the muzzle lightly stuffed with tissue paper. Either you will need to mount a scope or just do without sights. We just did without, which was good enough for recreational rat hunting.

The classic silencer is just a tube with washers spaced down it and welded in place. It can be attached to the barrel in different ways. The traditional way is to thread the outside of the barrel and one end of the silencer. This is probably the most effective means of maintaining alignment, which is important. If your .22 has a removable front sight, you can design a mount that fits snugly over the barrel and anchors in the sight mounting screw holes.

For a .22, a good silencer would be a about 4' long with .25' washers spaced every .25' down the tube. The tube should be slightly larger than the OD of the washers. Weld them at 4 spots on the perimeter, leaving a small gas channel between the welds. Obviously, alignment with the bore is critical.

Here in America they haven't managed to dent the first amendment yet. We can still exchange information without fear of reprisal. The BATF will not come wash my mouth out with soap.

I don't know about Canada. Would they really send the mounties out of you said something they don't like?

put a potato over the muzzel it works good for the first 5 to 10 shots then you have to get a new one but they are ceap

or you can have a piece of steel made to fit on the end of you gun the hole in the steel should be about .005 larger than the bore have the steel should have holes or slots cut into it then them make a canister to fit over the steel the canister should be at least an inch bigger in the middel than the steel pack it with insulation or baffel packing that should give you a good start on one have fun
