Michael, I just put a VX-1 4-12x, matte finish, on my Sako 223 and while it is at the outer reaches of 'size appropriate' it is doing nicely for me so far (it's shooting MOA or a little better with several different 60-69 grain bullets so I thought it would benefit from a little more oomph than the Burris 6x Compact it had been wearing). I bought mine from Ultimate Outdoors www.ultout.com for a buck or two less than what other folks are charging for gloss. So is it a 'Rifleman' in a VX-1 box; don't know. Perhaps the Rifleman packaging is cheaper but otherwise it looks - and the specs describe - a VX-1 with matte finish. Of course I'm testing it on an eight pound 223 so that is not the same ride it would get on a big game rifle but the view is clear, the adjustments precise, and with Leupold's warranty what have I to lose? Good hunting! Michael

My mistake. According to an article in _The American Rifleman_ the Leupold Rifleman line lacks the Multi-Coat on the exterior of the objective and ocular lenses that is applied to the VX-1.

Ultimate Outdoors is asking $184 for a 2-7x Rifleman but only $188 for the VX-1 matte so why not buy the coating? SWFA will sell you the same glass in gloss for only $180, otherwise their prices are higher. Elsewhere Galyans is advertising $200 for the 3-9x VX-1 gloss (a little better than the $202 Ultimate Outdoors is getting for the same scope in matte) so now appears to be a good week to try the new Leupolds... Good hunting!

I just saw the Leupold rifleman scopes at Walmart in Alabama. I think the prices were from 180's to a little over 200.
