Notice to all Iowa deer hunters! The state has just passed more increases to your fees. Now it will cost a resident $51.00 to harvest a deer. Beginning July 1 this year the hunting the lic. increases by 34% to $17.00, the deer tag is $26.00 and the habitat tag is $8.00. All of these are required to take a deer. Most of this is caused by the North American Hunting Clubs journalism in two articles misrepresenting the facts comparing res. vs. non res. costs. (yes, I have written to them twice to point out their mistakes.) They compared the whole cost of the three parts for non res. to the deer transportation tag only cost for res. 'accidentally' omitting the habitat and hunting lic. fees for residents. Now it is cheaper for a res. of Iowa to hunt deer in many other states. Hmmm... maybe Iowa wants its residents to spend their money in other states?

Nevada is 24 for license and 25 for a tag if you can get one...and you get to shoot one deer only. There's another 10 application fee just to apply for a tag that you may not even get. Then there's a 3 dollar predator fee and another 2 bucks for something else that they say they do for us..

Your fee structure sounds fair to me...but I don't know what the expenses of your DNR is to manage the game you hunt. I for one will not complain about these fees...especially when I launch my boat on a ramp that was paid for by those fees or harvest a deer that was managed by those funds. Not saying that you should not complain...just saying I would not.

cuz I'm a 'happy hunter'

Here in Utah it is $35 for the tag then 5$ for the application fee to put into the drawing, tags are not over the counter anymore. Also it is pick your weapon, you have to choose if you want to hunt during the Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle hunt. The only way one can hunt all three seasons is to join the Dedicated Hunter program that Utah offers. It costs 175$ for the three year program and you can only take two deer in the three year period. You also have to do 24 hours worth of service projects for the DWR.

$51 dollars a year to hunt all three seasons/weapons and take a deer every year sounds like a pretty good deal to me. How many deer can you take a year with that $51 dollars?

I get your point. I hunted just outside of Des Moines about twenty years ago. Arrowed the biggest buck I ever harvested. He was 220 lbs. dressed out probably 300 or better on the hoof. It took six of us to tote him out. Six perfect points on each side. Hey check out http://www.PoachersNightmare.com

Dang, you all need to come and hunt east. MD will cost you $105 for an out of state license and you get up to 24 deer if you can hunt the entire season in each zone. In VA you will pay 104 dollars for an out of state license and can get 4 deer. It cost me about $25 for a resident VA license that entitles me to deer, bear and turkey. I love pheasant and duck hunting in Northwest IA, but damn if I'd pay an out of state license to kill a deer there.

Another way to look at those license fees is that the money goes to support a good cause. Where would we be without the support and work of our state fish & wildlife departments?

And Iowa, at least according to the major scribes, seems to offer better trophy opportunities.
