I'm planning my first Idaho elk hunt ....

Using the following information, what should I be aware of?

- First time elk hunter, experienced New England deer hunter - no guide, going with brother who has hunted in AZ & NM - Hunting Sawtooth region - 30-06 with Hornady Light Magnum 180s - also have a deer tag

Comments? Opinins?

Thanks, scott

First, get yourself in shape. I mean real shape! The sawtooth range makes the 'mountains' in New England look like a walk in the park! Check out the picture of the sawtooths at this site: Idaho Photo Gallery www.tcd.net/~mtnstates/photos/id_gal.html and another good pic at http://www.scenic-cycling.com/northwst/idaho.html

Gear, must have good boots and a good pack frame that you can tie a quarter of a elk to a walk a mile with (providing you don't have horses or mules)

Oh and did I say get in shape

I agree with the other guys. Get in shape and be prepaird for winter weather. Even if it dosn't snow it will be cold in the mornings. Don't be too disapointed if you don't get an elk, the average is 7 tags out of 100 get filled statewide. I got a big 6X6 three years ago and haven't even seen an elk since and I'm not a road hunter. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Pay the money and get a guide. Wouldn't hunt an elk with anything less than a 7mm. I pefer 300 mag even deer hunt with one. If you ask why I like long shots, and with one bullet. And you'd better start conditioning yourself. Nother good reason for haveing a guide. Getting your animal out of thier. Beleave me after you have shot him and carried on quarter back to your truck you might have wished you'd never seen him so start jogging, and jogging up hills.
