I am going to bowhunt mule deer in a new area this year and I think the best way to hunt this spot will be to hunt the water holes. This will new a new way to hunt for me as mostly I have always spot and stalked when mule deer hunting. There are several cattle stock tanks in the area and they receive a lot of use from the deer population so I think this will be the best method.

What are some effective ways to hunt water holes? A tree stand will be hard because most the trees in the area are scrub oak and I don't think they will hold a stand so I am going to have to use a ground blind. What is the best blind to use, a pre made camo blind or one made from natural materials. What times of day is best to sit a waterhole? The hunt will be the end of August so it will still be hot so I would think evenings would be the most affective times to hunt as the deer will be thirsty after the heat of the day. Can mornings be a good time as well? I am going to start scouting this weekend and try to find the best place for an ambush.

Check you lunar charts and be sure you're hunting on a less than half moon. If it's a full moon, the deer will water all night and bed down before sun up. You're more likely to see deer near feed or water holes when the moon light is dim.
