I sent Hodgdon a email asking how I cant tell the age of the powder I was buying. This was there response:
There is a lot number on the bottom of the can. It will read something like this: 10905034526 And that breaks down as the first digit is the size of the container, then the next is the date it was canned, then the master lot number is the last 4 digits. Thanks, Phil Hodgdon

The last sequence of numbers after the date numerals can be 2, 3, or 4 numerals. I have several cans which have 2 numbers, one can with 3, and one 4. In the date for that powder is the first set of 2 numbers the month or the date of the month?

This is correct for powder made after Sept 2000. A better discription would have been either a 1 or 8 for size container, a space then a six digit date in the format of mmddyy. The remaining numbers (2 to 4) would be the master lot number.
Checking my powders, I found 1 01180072 on a bottle of H380 and the Varget has 1 1018013881. What I found was that somewhere between May and Sept 2000, Hogdon went to a four digit master number.
If store half way decently, powder will last for years. I've fired .45ACP ball that was 30 plus years old. And when I was a kid (1947) surplus powder was sold in bulk for less than a dime a pound. You'd take a paper bag to the vender and buy a quater's worth and be set for a year or so.

This might be for some powders. I just checked my one and 4 pound can of TiteGroup and each one has a 2 digit master number. Two different lots but definately on two numbers.
