Don't try it for Brown Bear is the sensible advice.

Just keep in mind that the energy of a 44 Mag is considerably less than a 30-30, not to mention that it's a handgun. I would use the highest energy load I could find and make dang sure that I could put the bullet where I wanted it.

The first question is; What kind of bear? The second questions is; How experienced are you? You will want a heavy bullet with good penetration. 240, 250 Gr maybe even 300 Gr. bullets.

I've never hunted bear, but from what I've heard and read of their anatomy were I hunting black bear with a .44 magnum I'd use heavy cast lead flat nose bullets - 300 grain's or better - going as fast as safety, reliability, accuracy, and recoil tolerance allow. Federal offers such a load, as does Buffalo Bore <http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm> Good hunting! Michael

Mark,

Since no one has brough this up yet, I'll chime in.

The load or caliber doesn't matter. Just be sure to file the front sight off. That way when shoot the bear and piss it off, it doesn't hurt as much as it shoves up your a**.
