Im trying to find a budget priced rifle. I want to get it in 3006. I do want an accurate rifle as I am capable of shooting very tight groups. Which rifle would be the best choice of the 3. Howa, Savage, or the colt light rifle? Thanks!

Savage has the best reputation of the three for accuracy. I'd also suggest you look at the CZ 550, a classic controlled-feed Mauser actioned rifle

I think a Savage would be the best bet. If it were me doing the buying, I'd opt for a short-action 11F in .308

Paul,

When I did my shopping for a light rifle to hunt elk I too looked at the Savage & Colt. I went with the Savage, less than 1/2 the cost of the colt. I love my 110, .30-06

Paul, The Colt is not cheap, appears to be all but discontinued, and for some reason lacks the charm of the Ultralight Arms rifle of which it is a knockoff. If you could find a Howa for less than a WalMart Savage I'd jump on it. As it is the Savage is going to be cheapest. I don't own one, but everyone I corresponded with who does seems quite satisfied with theirs. Since cash is an issue (no shame there; I don't know a real rifleman who couldn't use a little more scratch to fund his hobby) I second Mr. Bowden's suggestion about buying a .308 instead of a .30'06. No deer will know the difference, but surplus 7.62x51 is common where affordable '06 practice ammo is but a pleasant memory. Good hunting! Michael

I'd go with $200 for the scope and rifle and $300 for the binoculars.

Thanks for all the replies! I already have a good nikon 1.5-4.5x scope. I will most likely go with the savage. BTW, anyone want to buy a Winchester100?
