I notice that Big 5 Sporting Goods has a Mossburg 12 gauge vent rib 3' chamber pump (500?) with an extra 18.5' barrel on sale for $220. That's about the cheapest deal on a new pump I have seen. If you know somebody who wants to get into bird hunting and doesn't have a shotgun, that would be a cheap way to get started.

I assume you're talking about a Benelli Nova. Yes, it is a nice gun.

For the hunter on a budget or a beginner the Mossberg is a good deal. With available accessories you can bird hunt, deer hunt, and black powder hunt by changing the barrels. For less than the price of a modern rifle, you can have a do it all gun!

I don't know about the 'best'. At least the Italian name sounds expensive. If you want to get a good pump, buy an Ithaca.

The point is, sometimes that extra $80 would be the difference between getting a shotgun and not getting a shotgun. To some 18 year old kid flipping burgers, the Mossburg might look pretty good. It is certainly a functional shotgun, and will bag a lot of birds. If you mount rifle sights on the extra 18.5' barrel, it's a short range deer gun too.

I paid $49 brand new for the first shotgun I ever bought, and went on a lot of great duck hunting trips with it. You don't need a fancy shotgun to have a lot of fun.

Mossberg isn't the garbage gun it USED to be. Mossbergs made now are very good dependable economic-priced shotguns. Not as nice as a Rem. but a very good deal, especially at $220 new.

I have had a Mossberg 500 for 3-4 years now and have been very happy with it. My only complaint is it is a bit too light for shooting heavy 3' waterfowl loads, but not unbearable. The modern Mossberg's are backed by a 10 year warantee.
