Is the .22 LR suitable for short-range coyote hunting? I would be using a scoped semi-automatic rifle with 40 grain solid points for better penetration.

Thanks, Glenn Wallace

No. Nothing bigger than fox for that round.

I took three coyotes last spring with a .22LR and two more this fall using a Browning semi-auto with a Simmons .22 Mag scope. Don't recommend it unless you happen to get very close as I was able to do.

My brother-in-law shot one at long range and it ran off. We found it the next morning in his barn, still alive but suffering greatly. Had rubbed the hair off large parts of its body.

Have also shot skunks, coons and fox with a .22LR and have NEVER been impressed. A .22Mag would be a better choice and a .223 would be a *MUCH* better choice.

Now that I have a .22-250 I'll stick to that for coyotes.

IMHO I would never use solid bullets on an animal. Hollow points also tend to ricochet less, they expend their energy when they hit. A shotgun with #4 buck is an excellent choice for close range coyote calling, and a duo with one shotgun, one .223 or such is a deadly combo. .22 LR is a little light, but can still get the job done, I'd recommend a light centerfire

IMHO .... NO.

Not unless you restricted yourself to head-shots only.
