Bullet for moose
I thought I posted this earlier, but I didn't see it, so I'll try this repost. This is a follow up to a thread I started last Summer. I asked successful moose hunters if I should use my .30-06 on a moose hunt, or borrow a friend's .338. Not one successful moose hunter said I needed the bigger .338. So, I put a new scope on my old, heavy, .30-06 Browning BAR, & sighted it in using 220 grain bullets. On opening day, my cousin shot a bull, through the lungs, with his .30-06. It turned & ran, giving me a running broadside shot, at 50 yards. I held the cross hairs right on the bull's shoulder & squeezed the trigger. The bull dropped like a hard hit duck, I was pretty surprised & impressed. The next afternoon, our guide called in a 2 year old bull. At 145 yards, I asked the guide if I should shoot, seeing he was not real big. The guide said 'he's a good one, shoot' & when the bull turned, I shot, then shot again. After the 2nd shot he was behind some brush & I had to move to take my 3rd & 4th shots. When we got to him he was dead. I hit him 3 of 4 shots, I believe I missed the 2nd shot, when he started running. One shot, I'm sure it was the 1st shot, was through the lungs. The .30-06 did the job, as you all said it would, & I thank you all for your messages. Dave Proffit < This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it >

Re:Bullet for moose
So was it a good moose ? Did you really want a trophy quality moose ?

It is the guide's best interest that you finish your hunt ASAP. That could be why he told you to take the moose.

Re:Bullet for moose
My priorities were: 1st - meat, 2nd - trophy quality antlers

With that in mind, it was a 'good moose'

Why would it be the guides best interest that that I finish the hunt ASAP? Wouldn't his best interest be that I feel I had a quality hunting experience? Also, 2 in our group did not get to shoot a moose. My little 2 year old delicious moose sure is a trophy compared to what those guys took home.
