You will be digging into your wallet to shoot plains game and varmints. That's what you'll do unless you're trying for a 45-inch buffalo, which you may or may not get in 10-days.

Read SCI's 'SAFARI; The Journal of Big Game Hunting' (July/August 1999 p30) Dawn of the Hunt: (by Thomas Ford ) in which he describe a buffalo hunt for him and his son. He shot his Buffalo on his first hunting day but his son hunted for 10 days without a shot at a Buffalo (and he was not trying out for the record books). His son went home without his Buffalo but with great memories of Africa.

I will agree that most outfitters hope that you will try out plain's game while your at it and why not. You have traveled 10 000 miles to get to Africa. But the other side is also true. Would you like to leave after 5 days without your Buffalo if you had spend $7 000 on your accommodation and air ticket? No one can guarantee you a 100% kill rate in 2-3 days on a Cape Buffalo hunt. That is sales talk. Even if the outfitter give you 99.99% success rate, there is still a chance that you will go home empty handed.

You can keep yourself busy on a 10 day hunt without spending much extra money. After taking that Buffalo it will feel as if you can move the hole world and all within it.

I wouldn't spend $9900 for just ONE Cape buffalo. If plains game were thrown in, e.g., impala and eland, then it could be worth it. At least you're going to South Africa

Gentlemen, NOTHING could be further from the truth. I do not support 'canned' hunts nor would I ever participate in one. I am an avid outdoorsman and supporter of DU, QU, NWTF, QDMA, TU, NRA and several others, donating tens of thousands of dollars in cash and trips to support their cause each year.

I was simply making a little joke...get over it.

I am an outfitter and have booked many, many hunters over the years for African safari. Although Africa is a beautiful and wild country, riding around in a Land Rover and shooting plains game does not excite me very much. But, I understand that many hunters love it. And as long as they wish to go, I will continue to send them and get paid just as you do.... Good luck and great hunting.

As always, my opinions are just my opinions,

Hi Tim,

It is sometimes difficult to decide whether a poster was serious or not when making a comment in a post. Your post touched a raw nerve and I apologise if I offended you in any way.

Unfortunately, canned hunts are a problem and have been in the news here in South Africa quite a lot recently. The average South African Hunter is also dead against Canned hunts.

Regards

Doug Norval
