What's your opinions on the minimal blade length to adequately skin a large game animal (sheep, deer, moose)? I'm looking to get the smallest knife I can get the job done with. A lockblade if at all possible. Maybe the CUDA EDC, but it's got a really short blade.

You don't need much of a knife blade at all to be a useful skinner...I've seen guides do remarkable things with a 3 blade Schrade Stockman.

A 3' blade would be very useful.

Try a little jewel called the 'Whitetail Skinner'. Since I first used one, I don't use anything else. I Butcher with a Buck 110.

'tom'

Tom, I use a curved fixed bladed knife called a 'catgutter', got it for Christmas several years ago. 3 inch blade. Even has an index finger hole in the blade. I love it. Whatever you get make sure it's at least a lockblade. I seen too many people using a folding blade and have it fold up at the wrong time.

I started with a Buck 110 and then moved to a 105 and 119 Special. These serve me well for a long time. I was given a Buck Lite 112 that was slightly smaller than the 110 and I loved it and retired the others. I started carrying a Case Trapper Yellow Handle as my carry all and found that it was the perfect knife for me in all my skinning affairs. I still pull out the older buck knives and use them from time to time, but for the most part now it is the Trapper that has won my heart and respect.

I am a knifemaker and a member of the Knifemakers Guild. I recommend a 4 to 5 inch blade for skinning, particularly if you go for game bigger than whitetail. As important as the length is the shape of the blade. You need something with curve or 'belly' in the edge.

Take a look on my web page at the 'Orion Skinner' and you'll see what I'm talking about visually. This basic blade shape was copied by me years ago from a blade that was being used by an Eskimo or Alaskan Indian as a seal skinner. I prettied it up and added a short guard. Most folks that use it think it is about the ultimate in skinner design.

I was wondering if you think the new skinning hachet work just as good a knife for skinning big game animals.
