I'll be hunting in Oregon, where I live, and Oregon is a great state for hunting, but I'm also considering a fall 'vacation' to elk and/or deer hunt. What would be my best choices? My criteria would be epic scenery, decent success ratios, easy to get tags (perferably over the counter).

Trophy quality does not matter in the least to me. If I go out-of-state to hunt, I'd lean more towards success ratios than rack size.

I am from New Mexico originally, so a hunt in Arizona or NM would be cool. I have heard great things about Idaho, Wyoming, Montana...

I am not a rich man by any stretch. This would be a hunt I'd drive to, and I'd be camping, and I'd not be hiring a guide. I might be alone, even. So I'd be factoring cost in to some degree.

Thank you!

I'll be doing the same thing this year (Based out of Nevada). I chose either Montana or Wyoming. I have the same criteria as you...no guide, no money for hotels, no desire to see anyone other than a hunting buddy if he decides to tag along.

On the way home I'll be stopping by your home state to hunt with a brother in law.

Wyoming. Very easy to get tags there if you're not picky about what part of the state.
