I have a Nikon 3-9x40 Monarch UCC rifle scope, and a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight. What is the best way to mount the scope, and what hardware do I need to buy?

The mountable part of the scope barrel is only 134 mm long (from bell to bell), if that helps.

TIA

Dave,

You didn't say what caliber, but that shouldn't matter too much. I am using the same scope on a Ruger MkII in .25-06. Needless to say, I used the Ruger rings in a med. height.

Right now, I am setting up a Leupold 3-9X40 on a .30-06 Sprng.Win. Mod.40 Classic Sporter LT, using Leupold STD bases and rings. Which, in my opinion, is what you ought to use on the Nikon - Leupold bases and rings in whatever 'flavor' you like, or that the gunsmith recommends. They are very stable and machined to a tight tolerance. I think they are the best platform - Ruger excluded due to it's atypical reciever - that you can use for a scope. I have to say, you picked a good scope. Mine has endoured plenty of abuse over the years, and set the benchmark for every other scope that I buy. The new Leupold VXII finally matches it in clarity and brightness.

Good luck, and let me know how it turns out.
