Depends on what you want it to do? One shot, one kill accuracy? Repeatable shot capability? Rifled barrel and sabot slugs or smooth bore and rifled slugs? What gauge do you want to shoot?

There are some nice rifled barrel bolt actions by Browning and Mossberg with high accuracy and scope mounting capability. I almost got one and wish I would have now.

I like the ghost ring sights on the Benelli M1super90 better than anything without a scope. It allows for fast accurate target acquisition and the semi auto allows for repeated shots. Price is a concern though.

Then I like the Remington 870 and 1100. They are loaded with different options as far as rifled barrel, smooth bore, or rifled choke tube, sights or scope mounted, short barrels, magazine extenders, etc. Less expensive and nice quality compared to Mossberg pumps.

Last suggestion is to look into Browning guns with the 5 inch rifled choke. Have heard that for some reason they are more accurate than the fully rifled barreled guns. I also am looking into going to a 20 gauge for slugs. Less recoil and similar or better ballistics as far as trajectory is concerned. They still have plenty of power for clean kills and will cause the shooter to flinch less adding to accuracy. Especially if follow up shots are needed.

Just my opinions and I am sure there will be many others. Good Luck shopping. Ed

I have used an Ithaca Deerslayer Deluxe pump 12 ga. shotgun with a smoothbore rifle length barrel, with Winchester slugs and a 2X Leupold scope for 20 years and have taken at least one deer each year. It isn't very heavy but it does have a heck of a kick in the shoulder. And it has never jammed.

The Ithaca is relatively inexpensive and second-hand ones are around. It depends on how much money you've got to spend. My experience with various shotguns leads me to conclude that for deer hunting it isn't so much the weapon as the amount of practice the shooter invests. My Ithaca puts 5 in the black at 100 yards. For where I hunt that is enough weapon.

A new Ithaca model 37, 20ga. The quality is back at the 60's level. The bottom eject is good for left handers and there is a fully rifled barrel available for it and it is easy to carry because of the light weight. I had a 37 from 69 till 92 with no problems. I hope the person that stole it, along with my other guns.is enjoying it as much as I did.

Mike

I would suggest either a Remington 870 or 11-87. I use a 11-87 with a cantilever scope mount rifled barrel. I do have a scope attached to it as well. My gun shoots 1 1/2 inch groups of 5 at 100 yards with Remington copper solid 3 inch slugs.

I like the Mossberg 695. Great sites. Drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Nice look and feel. No noisy pump or action to rattle around and spook that 12 pointer.

(Not to mention the fact that Mossberg is a great company with that old fashioned 'the customer comes first, and the customer is always right' attitude.
